Healthcare Cybersecurity: Five Things to Look for in 2017
Cybersecurity is an important topic within any industry. That importance is taken to another level within healthcare, however, where patient records and other information need to be carefully guarded. As is the case with anything in the technology sector, healthcare cybersecurity is constantly changing and evolving, as it needs to stay one step ahead of the threats that it faces. So what can we expect to see as new developments in 2017? The following five points are all keys to watch for in the year ahead.
#1 – Importance of RegTech
RegTech, or regulatory technology, is something that has become increasingly important in recent years. Basically, it is the process of meeting regulatory requirements through the use of technology. This is a natural step for healthcare cybersecurity to take, of course, as there are plenty of regulations to keep up with in the healthcare world. As the threats that are faced by the healthcare industry become more and more high-tech, the solutions to those problems need to be based in technology as well. Without any doubt, healthcare is going to move quickly in the RegTech direction.
#2 – Reaction to Changing Government Leadership
Given the change that is coming to the White House, it seems certain that there are going to be significant changes to the way healthcare works in the United States. Those changes are almost certainly going to have some kind of effect on cybersecurity as things change rapidly moving forward. It might seem like the potential changes on the table would reduce regulations, it may not play out that way practically for healthcare providers.
#3 – HIPAA Flexes Its Muscle
There has not been a dramatic number of fines or other enforcements of the HIPAA laws up until this point, but that seems destined to change in the near future. Reviews seem to be on the rise, and it is very possible that there could be some fines coming to those who are not doing a good job of keeping up with the regulations. Ensuring that you are current with HIPAA is an important piece of the healthcare cybersecurity puzzle.
#4 – HITRUST Popularity
Known as the Health Information Trust Alliance, this company is known for their development of the Common Security Framework for use by organizations. That framework includes controls which are intended to help bring together compliance on a complex set of standards and regulations which exist within the healthcare industry. This framework seems poised to gain even more and more popularity in the year ahead.
#5 – Increased Investment
With each year that passes, healthcare organizations gain a better and better understanding of the investment required to keep networks and databases secure. In 2017, it is very likely that we will see budgets increased within many healthcare organizations with regard to their cybersecurity efforts. Threats such as ransomware have already had a major impact on multiple organizations, so spending in this area makes sense as an investment in the future. It is one thing to have the security of data breached, which is a big deal in itself, but it is another thing to have a system hijacked to the point where an organization cannot operate for a period of time. By spending large amounts of money on cybersecurity efforts, organizations will hope to avoid even bigger losses due to an attack.
